Huge salt-water aquariums that are full of fish and plants are mesmerizing and beautiful!. Some fish have such vibrant colors and distinctive markings, with plants that are not only aesthetic, but provide oxygen and life. Most of the time, the crystal clear water provides an amazing living environment, clean and healthy. One thing we know about fish tanks is that a salt-water aquariums must have water that is not too saline and not too fresh. The temperature of the water must be neither too hot nor too cold, and the chemical makeup must not be too acidic or too bland. The water in the tank must be perfectly balanced in a number of ways to sustain the lives of the fish and the plants. Quite a neat analogy to how we strive for balance in our own lives! Work, family, friendships, time for worship, recreation, hobbies, caring for loved ones, exercise, chores, meetings…they all make it very hard to maintain harmony in our lives by having just the right amount of each thing. It may appear that we do a pretty fair job of keeping an equilibrium, but are we taking into consideration a crucial element? Let’s look back at the aquarium again. We know that fish create waste, making the water polluted, and over time, what started out as the most perfectly balanced aquarium soon becomes unlivable. The crucial element is the filter, which pumps the dirty water out of the tank, through purifying elements, and returns clean, life-sustaining water back to the fish’s environment. Is it any different with our own lives? Things happen that throw off the balance of our seemingly synchronized lives. It may be a habit that leads to excess or even addiction. Perhaps we wander away from Jesus when we need to be running to Him. God has such better options planned for us than the ones that we often choose. Keeping our life’s activities balanced is only part of what we all need to maintain an environment where we can thrive. Like the aquarium, we, too, need a filter in our lives. Jesus is that filter. He is the forgiver, the correcting parent, the loving Father, the counselor, the healer the doctor…the purifier of our shameful sins. He’s always standing by, waiting for an invitation to be the filter system in our everyday lives. When we turn to Him, He takes the waste of our lives, filters it through the blood that He shed on the cross for our sins, and returns it to us as purified living water. His living water is what truly helps us to maintain a balanced environment! Make it a great week, praising God that HE yearns to be our filter system…if only we just invite Him, Cindy, inspired by Bruce
